Nahnatchka Khan is going into business with Universal Television, Deadline confirms. In what was described as a “competitive situation,” the company landed Khan for an eight-figure, four-year overall producing deal. The exclusive pact sees her creating, developing, supervising, and producing series projects.
Best known for creating and executive producing ABC sitcoms “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23,” Khan is “coming off a series of overall deals at 20th Century TV where she had been for almost her entire career to date, with her tenure spanning the past decade and a half,” the source details.
“Natch is a singular voice with a proven track record of success and versatility,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, President, Universal Television. “She’s a highly sought-after writer/director/producer whose work reflects a deep commitment to the representation of women and diverse communities. We couldn’t ask for a better collaborator.”
Kahn’s feature directorial debut, “Always Be My Maybe,” will hit Netflix this summer. Co-written by Kahn, the rom-com tells the story of Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park), childhood sweethearts who haven’t seen each other in 15 years. They reconnect as adults when the former is working as a celebrity chef and the latter is a struggling musician. Kahn is also set to direct Danielle Macdonald-starrer “White Girl Problems,” a comedy about a woman with a shopping addiction. She previously directed eps of “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Don’t Trust the B—-.”
