Cannes darling Naomi Kawase has kicked off filming on her latest project, “Asa ga Kuru,” or “Comes Morning.” Inspired by a 2015 Mizuki Tsujimura novel, the Japanese writer-director’s next feature will tell the story of “a woman who adopts a child, but is contacted by its birth mother out of the blue,” Variety reports.
Casting details haven’t been announced. Principal photography began mid-April at six locations around Japan, including Hiroshima, and shooting is scheduled to wrap in early June.
“The talent of Mizuki Tsujimura, who created the world of ‘Asa ga Kuru,’ makes me jealous,” said Kawase in a statement. “I’m overjoyed that I can turn this story into a film.”
The film is expected to arrive in 2020.
“Suzaku,” Kawase’s debut feature, took home the 1997 Camera d’Or at Cannes. She scored a Jury Prize from the fest in 2007 for “Mourning Forest.” All told, she’s screened eight films at Cannes.
Kawase’s most recent feature, 2018 Juliette Binoche-starrer “Vision,” tells the story of a journalist tracking a mysterious, rare herb that appears once every 997 years. She has been tapped to helm the official film of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
