Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o are coming to the small screen. Deadline reports that the Oscar winners are both set to take on their first major TV roles in Apple TV+’s “Lady in the Lake,” a limited series adaptation of Laura Lippman’s book.
Directed by “Honey Boy” helmer Alma Har’el, the project is set in ’60s Baltimore and sees an unsolved murder pushing Maddie Schwartz (Portman), a “housewife and mother,” to “reinvent her life as an investigative journalist and sets her on a collision course with Cleo Sherwood, played by Nyong’o, a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, many jobs, and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore’s Black progressive agenda.”
Har’el, who co-created the show and will co-write it with “The Man in High Castle” scribe Dre Ryan, is penning the pilot.
Portman, Nyong’o, and Har’el are among the project’s exec producers.
A three-time Oscar nominee, Portman took home the honor for “Black Swan.” “Lucy in the Sky,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Vox Lux” are among her more recent credits. She can be seen next in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” currently slated for release in May 2022.
Nyong’o scored an Oscar for her breakout role in “12 Years a Slave.” Her other credits include “Us,” “Black Panther,” and “Queen of Katwe.” She stars alongside Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, and Fan Bingbing in “The 355,” an upcoming spy thriller.
Har’el won a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film for 2019 coming-of-age drama “Honey Boy.” Her doc credits include “Bombay Beach” and “LoveTrue.”
