Natalie Portman just received a grant from the Jerusalem Film Fund to write, direct and star in an adaptation of Amos Oz’s memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness.
Taking place in the 1940s and 1950s, Oz’s memoir focuses on growing up in war torn Jerusalem, his mentally ill mother, his father’s attempts to care for her, and Oz’s own coming of age in becoming a writer and participating in the politics of Israel.
Portman has previously directed a short film and a segment in New York, I Love You. She’s mentioned in previous interviews her desire to work on this project. She will be playing Oz’s mother in the film.
Production is set to start in January in Israel.
