An “Insecure” actress and writer is joining forces with “Broad City’s” stars and creators on an animated project. Natasha Rothwell, who plays Kelly on HBO’s “Insecure,” is set to exec produce Comedy Central pilot “Malltown” alongside Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. Deadline broke the news.
Set in a “declining mall,” “Malltown” is a coming-of-age comedy about Libby, a 13-year-old girl who will be voiced by Rothwell. “Seen through the eyes of the budding teen, the mall is a microcosm of America and everything that’s totally screwed up about it,” the source hints.
“Insecure’s” fourth season kicked off on HBO earlier this month. “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Like a Boss,” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” are among Rothwell’s other recent credits. The former “SNL” scribe’s packed slate includes Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Hometown,” a Netflix feature she’s starring in and co-writing.
“Broad City” concluded its fifth and final season on Comedy Central last year. Jacobson’s credits include “Disenchantment,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “6 Balloons.” Glazer was last seen in her debut stand-up special, “The Planet is Burning,” on Amazon Prime. “Rough Night” and “The Night Before” are among her other credits.
