“Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is hitting VOD earlier than expected, no doubt due to theater closures and the coronavirus. Eliza Hittman’s award-winning drama, which opened in theaters March 13, will be available to rent at participating on-demand services for $19.99 starting April 3. Focus Features announced the news in a press release.
Penned by Hittman, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is the portrait of Autumn (Sidney Flanigan), a 17-year-old girl from rural Pennsylvania facing an unintended — and unwanted — pregnancy. Along with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder), she travels to New York City in the hopes of accessing an abortion.
“I felt it was essential to make a film about the very real barriers that a woman encounters in trying to get a legal abortion, and I thought it was a story I hadn’t seen before,” Hittman, whose other credits include “Beach Rats” and “It Felt Like Love,” told us.
“Never Rarely Sometimes Always” made its world premiere at Sundance, where it took home a Special Jury Award for Neorealism. The film also won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
“Birds of Prey,” “Emma.,” and “The Invisible Man” are among the other films that have been released on VOD early due to the coronavirus.
