A new documentary about Joan Rivers is set to premiere on New York’s PBS WNET Thirteen.
The late comedian was the subject of Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern’s 2010 critically acclaimed doc “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.”
“Joan Rivers: Exit Laughing” will celebrate the consummate, controversial performer’s legacy. Rivers died in 2014 and at the time of her passing, we wrote, “For women’s accomplishments, there has to be a first, and Joan was that in so many ways.” Her groundbreaking career will be explored in “Exit Laughing” with Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin, Lily Tomlin and more discussing her extraordinary influence and impact.
The doc is a first in a series that will recognize the masters of comedy and future inductees to the Comedy Hall of Fame.
“Comedy exists today because it was built on the shoulders of past generations of comedians who have pioneered the vast language of comedy and grown its power as an engine for social change,” said Jeffrey Pancer, curator of the Comedy Hall of Fame’s archives. “As such, Joan Rivers’ legacy and impact has been defined by other comedians: the artists that she knew and those she influenced, offering a unique perspective from the comedians that create the history of the field.”
“Joan Rivers: Exit Laughing” airs April 1.
