New Princess Diana Doc Coming to HBO

Princess Diana: TODAY/ YouTube

Twenty years ago, the world was rocked by the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales. HBO has acquired the U.S. rights to a new doc about the beloved royal icon produced by Oxford Film and Television for the ITV network in the UK. The premium cable network announced the news via a press release which reveals that “the unprecedented documentary will be built around interviews with The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, both of whom talk openly and in depth about their mother and how her influence has shaped their lives.”

Born Diana Spencer, Princess Diana broke with standard monarchy protocol by divorcing Prince Charles and speaking publicly about his affair with Camilla Bowles. Famed for her charitable and humanitarian work, Princess Diana fought to raise awareness about landmines, child bereavement, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS. She died in a car crash August 31, 1997 at the age of 36.

Directed by Ashley Gething (“Our Queen at Ninety”), the as-yet untitled film will be broadcast on both HBO and ITV later this year, and will feature new archival material and commentary from many influential figures in the Princess’ life.

“This film will show Princess Diana in a way she has never been seen before, through the eyes of the two people who knew her best,” emphasized Nick Kent, the film’s executive producer at Oxford Film and Television.

ABC will air a docuseries about Princess Diana in August. Her story has also been told in narrative works, including 2013’s “Diana,” which sees Naomi Watts portraying the last two years of Princess Diana’s life and her romance with Hasnat Khan.
