New Refinery29 Series Highlights Leaders on Feminism’s Frontlines

Who are some of the leading activists and revolutionaries fighting for gender equality around the world and what are their main concerns? A new eight-part original series from lifestyle website Refinery29 and Kassidy Brown and Allison Rapson, co-founders of the female media company We Are the XX, seeks to answer that question and put the spotlight on their respective causes. “A Woman’s Place: The Frontlines of Feminism” will chronicle the efforts of inspiring leaders from across the globe, including Senegal, Turkey, Egypt and the U.S., as they strive to protect, serve and empower girls and women. The series will be exec-produced by former NBCUniversal cable exec Lauren Zalaznick.

“I was inspired by Allison and Kassidy’s unwavering mission to champion women around the world and I’m proud to help amplify the creators’ voice and those of the women profiled in ‘A Woman’s Place,’” said Zalaznick, who serves as a strategic adviser to Refinery29.

The first episode of the series, released today and available to stream on Refinery29, sees Brown and Rapson travelling to the Phillipines to investigate the robust transgender culture there. Special attention is paid to Geena Rocero and Maki Gingoyon, two transgender woman working to ensure basic rights, such as legal recognition and healthcare, for the trans community. Gingoyon told Refinery29 that she is aiming for “[legal acknowledgement of] who you really are, regardless of what’s between your legs.”

A new episode of “A Woman’s Place: The Frontlines of Feminism” will launch every Tuesday on Refinery29.
