We’ll have to wait a bit longer to see two of the most highly-anticipated women-directed studio pics. Both Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” and Elizabeth Banks’ “Charlie’s Angels” reboot have been pushed back on the release schedule. Diana Prince will now be making her return to the big screen on June 5, 2020 instead of November 1, 2019. “Charlie’s Angels,” meanwhile, will be taking “Wonder Woman 1984’s” old release date. It was originally set to bow September 27, 2019.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news of “Wonder Woman’s” date change. “We had tremendous success releasing the first ‘Wonder Woman’ film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did,” Warner Bros. announced in a statement. “This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”
Franchise star Gal Gadot first announced “Wonder Woman 1984’s” release change on Twitter. Framing the move as a win, she called the summer premiere the film’s “rightful home”:
Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!

The sequel to 2017’s history-making superheroine story, “Wonder Woman 1984” will see Diana face off against The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Chris Pine will reprise his role as Steve Trevor and “Game of Thrones'” Pedro Pascal will also star. Jenkins wrote the script with Dave Callaham and Geoff Johns.
“Wonder Woman” netted over $412 million at the domestic box office, marking the highest-grossing film directed by a woman.
Deadline reported “Charlie’s Angels'” new premiere date, and noted the first “Charlie’s Angels” movie opened that same weekend in 2000.
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (the live-action “Aladdin”), and Ella Balinska (“A Modern Tale”) will play the titular angels. “Since the two original films starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, the Townsend Agency has grown considerably and gone global, providing security and intelligence services to a variety of private clients with offices and highly trained teams worldwide,” the source summarizes. Banks’ film “focuses on one of those teams.” The director will also appear in the film.
Banks previously directed “Pitch Perfect 2,” which earned $184 million domestically and became one of the highest-grossing films helmed by a woman.
“Charlie’s Angels” originated as a TV series in the ’70s. In addition to McG’s early-2000s film adaptations toplined by Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu, the story of a trio of female agents was made into a short-lived show in 2011. Rachael Taylor (“Jessica Jones”), Minka Kelly (“Friday Night Lights”), and Annie Ilonzeh (“Chicago Fire”) starred.
