NewFilmmakers Los Angeles’ (NFMLA) Monthly Film Festival for March will recognize women’s stories. The org announced that on March 16, in honor of Women’s History Month, it will celebrate “women behind the camera with an evening of films by female directors.”
The event will include two shorts programs and a centerpiece feature film, Pearl Gluck’s “The Turn Out,” a drama about a trucker who becomes embroiled in a sex trafficking ring after meeting a teenage sex worker.
“Butterflies,” Cady McClain’s portrait of a bullied mixed-race girl as she grows up, Erin Doyle Cooper’s “Believe Her,” portraying a rape survivor who decides not to file a police report, and more will play as part of “InFocus: Female Cinema – Fighting the Good Fight.” The program features shorts exploring systemic power, those it oppresses, and how it is challenged.
The other shorts program, “InFocus: Female Cinema – Unlikely Allies,” highlights unexpected friendships and collaborations. Among its titles are Adria Tennor’s “Pie,” which sees two women bonding over a scandalous baking secret, and Lisa Donato’s “There You Are,” focusing on a trans woman who must pose as a man to visit her dying grandmother.
