Nia DaCosta to Direct “Sleeping with the Enemy” Reboot for Fox Searchlight

Nia DaCosta is breathing new life into another ’90s pic. Late last year it was announced that the “Little Woods” writer-director would helm a “spiritual sequel” to “Candyman” for MGM, and now word comes that she’s signed on for a “reimagining” of “Sleeping with the Enemy” for Fox Searchlight. Deadline broke the news.

Released in 1991 and based on Nancy Price’s 1987 novel of the same name, the original “Sleeping with the Enemy” sees Julia Roberts playing a woman who fakes her own death to escape her abusive husband.

DaCosta made her feature debut with “Little Woods,” a modern day Western that screened at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, where it took home the Nora Ephron Award. The North Dakota-set story stars Tessa Thompson and Lily James as step-sisters. Ollie (Thompson) is on parole and Deb (James) is poor and pregnant with no support from her deadbeat ex. With one week to settle the mortgage on their mother’s house or face foreclosure, the pair resort to working outside the law. “Little Woods” hits theaters April 19.

When we asked DaCosta her thoughts on the #TimesUp movement and the push for equality in the film business she said, “I’m so, so glad it’s happening. As important as the people who enacted abuse on others are those that tolerated and enabled it,” she emphasized. “I am excited that fostering a safe and respectful workplace is being prioritized now. This is something that I have been hyperaware of through my experience working in television. I worked on three different shows in quick succession and what I learned is that the director creates the work environment, and that fostering a respectful set is a deliberate and purposeful process. I’m excited to see what amazing stories will now be told.”
