Nia Vardalos Prepping My Big Fat Greek Wedding Sequel

No success story better exemplifies Hollywood’s inability to cater to female tastes than Nia Vardalos’ sleeper hit My Big Fat Wedding, a romantic comedy written by and starring a then-chubby (read: not stereotypically “hot”) actress that ended up grossing $368 million worldwide on a $5 million production budget and earning Vardalos an Oscar nod for her screenplay.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding took five years to get from stage to screen, and it has taken double the time for the sequel — to a movie that earned 73 times what it cost to make — to be announced.

A full twelve years after the original film debuted, Vardalos has confirmed that she has completed a screenplay for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. On Twitter, she announced, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter. A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

Since her breakout success, Vardalos has worked mostly off-screen, penning the screenplays for Connie and Carla, Larry Crowne (co-written by Tom Hanks), and I Hate Valentine’s Day, helming the latter.

Vardalos has also just published Instant Mom, a memoir about the adoption of her preschool-age daughter.
