Nicole Holofcener Announces Follow-Up to Enough Said

After making one of her most personal films with Enough Said, Nicole Holofcener is stretching her creative muscles and doing a 180 by taking on a project whose premise didn’t begin with her.

Holofcener will write and direct the big-screen adaptation of Ted Thompson’s novel The Land of Steady Habits for Fox Searchlight. The film will mark Holofcener’s first male protagonist.

After tackling fiftysomethings in her winsome empty-nest comedy, Holofcener will take on an even older age in The Land of Steady Habits, which focuses on a misanthropic sixtysomething retired divorcee who finds his life curtailed by impossibilities. He experiments with his freedom and unhappiness — some might say that he acts out — by hard-drinking, taking drugs with prep-schoolers, and begging his wife (who has found a new boyfriend) to take him back.

Enough Said was Holofcener’s highest-grossing work with a pull of $25 million. Hopefully Steady Habits will give her an even larger audience.
