Ninja Thyberg is forming her own coven. The “Pleasure” filmmaker has been tapped to write and direct a remake of the 1987 dark comedy “The Witches of Eastwick” for Warner Bros., with Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick producing. Screen Daily broke the news.
Based on John Updike’s 1984 novel, the original “Witches of Eastwick” film starred Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer as three friends who are also, unbeknownst to them, sorceresses. The trio — each of whom is dissatisfied in her own way — unwittingly summon a mysterious man to their idyllic Rhode Island town, and chaos ensues.
A television adaptation of the story aired for one season on ABC, from 2009-2010. Rebecca Romijn, Jaime Ray Newman, and Lindsay Price starred.
Thyberg’s feature debut, “Pleasure,” premiered at Sundance in January and has since gone on to screen at Göteborg Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival: London, and Melbourne International Film Festival. It’s now at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Based on Thyberg’s 2013 short, the film, which sees a 19-year-old Swedish woman heading to L.A. to make a name for herself in porn, was also among the selections for Cannes 2020. The fest was cancelled due to the pandemic. A24 plans to release an uncensored cut of “Pleasure” as well as an R-rated version later this year.
Thyberg previously helmed various shorts such as “Girls & Boys” and “Hot Chicks.”
