“Nomadland” continues to pick up festival honors as we enter awards season. Variety reports that Chloé Zhao’s Frances McDormand-starrer won the Golden Frog and FIPRESCI jury honors at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, an annual event recognizing the world’s best cinematography.
Written and directed by Zhao, “Nomadland” tells the story of a Fern (McDormand), a woman from a Nevada mining town destroyed by the Great Recession. The 60-something begins living as a modern-day nomad, traveling across the U.S. in her camping van.
The Oscar hopeful won Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion and the Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award. “Nomadland” has also collected honors at Mill Valley Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival, among other fests. It is up for Best Feature at the IFP Gotham Awards. Every film nominated for the prize this year is directed by a woman. McDormand is also in the running for Best Actress at the Gotham Awards, which will take place January 11.
“Nomadland” hits theaters December 4.
Zhao previously directed “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” and “The Rider.” Next up for her is “The Eternals,” a Marvel pic about super-powered individuals fighting to control the universe. Angelina Jolie and Gemma Chan co-star.
