North Macedonia has chosen “Sisterhood” to represent it in the 2022 Oscars’ International Feature race. From writer-director Dina Duma, the drama tells the story of inseparable teenage girls whose friendship takes an unexpected turn when they’re involved in the accidental death of a classmate.
“The country received its second [International Feature] nomination in 2020 for Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov’s ‘Honeyland,’ which also received a nod in best documentary,” Screen Daily writes. “Honeyland,” a portrait of the last woman working as a wild beekeeper in Europe, landed honors at Sundance Film Festival as well.
Other women-directed titles submitted for consideration in next year’s International Feature category include Cannes winner “Titane,” a revenge thriller from Julia Ducournau, and German Film Award winner “I’m Your Man,” a sci-fi rom-com from “Unorthodox” director Maria Schrader.
The 2022 Oscars are scheduled to take place March 27.
