Fans of “Sex Education,” “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and/or “On My Block,” take note: Netflix has another teen-centric series on the way. The streamer has commissioned “Blood and Water,” a young adult drama about a local teen looking for answers about her family’s history. Deadline confirmed the news.
Set to be directed by “Number 37” helmer Nosipho Dumisa, “Blood & Water” sees its female protagonist “uncovering her family’s secret past and navigating the complicated world of a South African high school.”
“Blood & Water” is scheduled to kick off production later this year and launch in 190 countries in 2020. Daryne Joshua and Travis Taute will write and co-direct the series.
“Gambit Films and I are so excited to be working with Netflix on this explosive young adult drama, with not only a cool look at strong female leads but also a powerful mystery at its core,” Dumisa said. “As a director who loves genre, this series combines the best of so many and isn’t shy to delve into the real issues of youth culture, whilst jam-packing it with twists that will keep viewers guessing.”
“Number 37,” Dumisa’s feature debut, screened at SXSW 2018. The thriller tells the story of a paraplegic man who becomes involved in a blackmail scheme.
“I’m not sure that I’m in any position to give advice, but if there’s anything I can share it’s this: what you have to say is worth being said, so fight for it no matter what,” Dumisa told us.
