NYC’s Film Forum to Host Tribute to Elaine May

May in "A New Leaf"

New York City cinema Film Forum will pay special tribute to actress-comedian-filmmaker Elaine May during its upcoming “FAR-OUT IN THE 70s: A New Wave of Comedy, 1969-1979” film series. The venue will play ’70s-era movies starring and made by May beginning January 22.

May’s four features as a director — “A New Leaf,” “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Mikey and Nicky,” and “Ishtar” — will be included in the retrospective. In addition to directing, she toplined and wrote “A New Leaf” and penned “Mikey and Nicky” and “Ishtar’s” screenplays. Also set to screen are the May-written “The Birdcage” and “Heaven Can Wait” as well as the first film she appeared in, “Enter Laughing.”

May received Oscar nods for penning “Heaven Can Wait” and “Primary Colors.” In 2016 she won the Writers Guild of America West’s Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, an honor recognizing her career and body of work.

Most recently, May directed a 2016 installment of “American Masters” about her frequent collaborator, Mike Nichols. They performed together as a comedy duo in the ’50s and ’60s, and Nichols directed “The Birdcage” and “Primary Colors.” May is currently starring in Broadway’s “The Waverly Gallery,” a play exploring the effect a matriarch’s quickly-progressing Alzheimer’s has on her family.

Film Forum’s tribute to May will run January 22-February 12. Go to the venue’s website for tickets and the screening schedule.
