Two women-directed films — Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour — won recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle yesterday.

The Babadook, a horror movie that explores maternal isolation and frustration, was named Best First Film, while Citizenfour, the documentary about Edward Snowden that was shot as the whistleblower revealed NSA secrets to journalists for the first time, was chosen for Best Nonfiction Film.

Marion Cotillard won the Best Actress prize for The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night and Patricia Arquette picked up the Best Supporting Actress trophy for Boyhood.

A Special Award was given to Adrienne Mancia, the 84-year-old curator at MoMA’s Department of Film.
