Apparently not content with successfully combining abortion and romance in her debut film Obvious Child, writer-director Gillian Robespierre has announced that she’ll attempt to make divorce funny in her untitled follow-up, to be produced by OddLot president Gigi Pritzker.
Robespierre will co-pen the screenplay with writer Elisabeth Holm. Variety reports that the film will be about three women in New York. That the first-time filmmaker has lined up her next project before her debut feature has even premiered attests to the wonderfulness of Obvious Child — a film I caught at Independent Film Festival Boston last week and can’t praise enough for its hilarious jokes and wordplay, its matter-of-fact but touchingly kind approach to romance, and a winsome lead performance from former SNL cast member Jenny Slate.
