Love seeing Octavia Spencer on-screen but tired of seeing her in supporting roles? Here’s some good, long overdue news: The consistently excellent but underutilized actress is set to topline a new project, a true crime series that’s landed at Apple. Created by Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“The Good Wife”), “Are You Sleeping” is based on Kathleen Barber’s 2017 novel of the same name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series, which is currently in development, “offers a glimpse into America’s obsession with true crime podcasts” and “challenges viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is put on a public stage.”
Spencer and Reese Witherspoon are among the project’s exec producers. Witherspoon is already set to star in and exec produce a series set in the world of morning talk shows alongside Jennifer Aniston for Apple.
“Serial’s” Sarah Koenig has signed on to serve as a consultant on “Are You Sleeping.” Spellman will pen the script. No word on who will direct.
“I’m really drawn to stories that haven’t really been told,” Spencer has said. The “Gifted” actress believes media should “show a broader spectrum of the people in the world,” and wants “to see all shapes and sizes, all ages, all religions because that’s what our society is comprised of.” In early 2017, she formally announced her producing plans. “The role I’m destined to play is to be one of the greatest producers in Hollywood,” she declared. “It’s terrifying because it’s a huge undertaking, but I want to be a conduit for storytellers.”
Spencer can currently be seen in Sally Hawkins-starrer “The Shape of Water,” a star-crossed, otherworldly romance. She earned Oscar nods for “Hidden Figures” and “The Help,” and won for the latter.
