Olympian & Grammy Nominee Savanah Leaf Teams with A24 on Her Feature Debut “Earth Mama”

Leaf: A24

Savanah Leaf is getting backing from A24 on the next chapter of her remarkably varied career. The former Olympian is making her feature directorial debut with “Earth Mama,” a coming-of-age story.

According to Variety, “Earth Mama” follows a “pregnant single mother who embraces her Bay Area community as she determines the fate of her family.”

A24 is handling the global rollout of the film, which wrapped production this summer. A release date hasn’t been set yet.

Leaf directed Gary Clark Jr.’s Grammy-nominated music video for “This Land” and Common’s video for “HER Love.” Her other credits include the 2020 doc shot “The Heart Still Hums.” She competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, representing Great Britain in volleyball.

Asked her “main strength as a creative person,” Leaf told Muse by Clio, “I think probably being sensitive to the people in front of the camera. I am very conscious of how they feel and if the working environment is conducive to them being vulnerable and honest.”
