At long last, Netflix has released the news we’ve all impatiently been waiting for: “One Day at a Time” will return for a third season. Per Deadline, the heartfelt sitcom following Penelope and the rest of the Alvarez family will grace screens for (at least) another 13 episodes in 2019.
Created by Gloria Calderon Kellett (“iZombie”) and Mike Royce (“Everybody Loves Raymond”), “One Day at a Time” is a revival of the Norman Lear Indianapolis family sitcom that ran from 1975 to 1984. Its modernized reboot focuses on a single veteran mother (Justina Machado) and her Cuban-American family (Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, and Marcel Ruiz) in Echo Park. It carefully balances comedy while highlighting issues such as sexism, PTSD, white privilege, and — as audiences saw last season — the current political climate.
The public demand for the show’s return has showcased the true level of its communal impact. Critics and fans across social media alike have pleaded and demanded for more of the Alvarez family. Additionally, the Hispanic Media Coalition issued an open letter to Netflix emphasizing the importance of the show as a means of Latinx representation.
Members of the Coalition applauded the show as a “guiding light — the true north in and for an industry grappling with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusivity,” and commended its half female and half Latinx writers’ room.
If this persistent outcry has proven anything, it’s that representation rightfully sells. Hopefully, Netflix will take a hint and start responding to other calls for inclusion.
In the meantime, “One Day at a Time” will continue “pro-actively shifting the public narrative of Latino Americans” while “simultaneously setting the standard for positive and equitable representation.”
