Only 6 Women Directors in the UK’s Top 100 Films of 2015

Elizabeth Banks’ “Pitch Perfect 2,” Ava DuVernay’s “Selma,” Sarah Gavron’s “Suffragette,” Nancy Meyers’ “The Intern,” Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” and Lana and Andy Wachowski’s “Jupiter Ascending” were the only six women-directed films to crack the top 100 films of the 2015 UK box office (as of November 19).

That paltry figure was actually an improvement from the year previous, when only two female-helmed films — Debbie Isitt’s “Nativity 3: Dude, Where’s My Donkey?” and Peggy Holmes’ “The Pirate Fairy” — made the cut. Things are, of course, no better here in the U.S., where there were also only two female-helmed films to make the top 100: DuVernay’s “Selma” and Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken.”

Only 28 of the top 100 films in the UK featured female protagonists, though that number (and the one for women directors) may rise in the coming weeks with the releases of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2,” Jocelyn Moorhouse’s “The Dressmaker” and Angelina Jolie’s “By the Sea.”
