In our Fall 2015 theater preview, we noted that no new plays or revivals of plays by women are being produced on Broadway this autumn. If you’re left wondering how well women playwrights are represented on stages across the U.S. this year as a whole, the American Theatre website has published a list of the top 20 most-produced playwrights of the 2015–16 season, excluding Shakespeare.
We’ve got bad news: Only four of the playwrights listed are women.
The female playwrights who made the cut are Sarah Ruhl with 15, not including one adaptation, Lauren Gunderson with 13, Dominique Morriseau with 10 and Laura Eason with nine. Morriseau is one of three playwrights of color to be included on the list (the other two are men).
As for the stages these plays are being produced on, check out this sexism-in-theater infographic showing how women are underrepresented in most design fields.
