We’re one step closer to finding out which films will receive Oscar nods. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists for a number of categories including Documentary Feature. Of 15 titles in the running for that honor, eight are directed or co-directed by women, amounting to 53 percent of the hopefuls.
A total of 150 films were submitted in the Documentary Feature category. The shortlist includes “For Sama,” Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’ look inside life in Aleppo through five years of the Syrian revolution, and “Knock Down the House,” Rachel Lears’ portrait of four working-class, progressive women entering the world of politics. “One Child Nation,” Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang’s exploration of the untold history of China’s controversial one-child policy, and “Honeyland,” Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s tribute to the last woman working as a wild beekeeper in Europe, also made the cut.
Oscar nomination are slated to be announced on January 13 and the ceremony will place February 9. Check out all of the women-directed and co-directed feature documentaries vying for a nomination below. List adapted from Variety.
