“Paper Girls” Adaptation Scores Amazon Series Commitment

"Paper Girls" is based on the graphic novel series of the same name: Image Comics

Amazon Studios has handed out a series commitment to “Paper Girls,” an ’80-set drama about time-traveling young girls that sounds like a delightful mash-up of “Stranger Things” and “Doctor Who.” The streamer came out victorious in a “competitive situation,” according to Deadline.

Based on Brian K. Vaughan’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, the series follows four girls who, “while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers, sending them on an adventure through time that will save the world,” the source summarizes. “As they travel between our present, the past, and the future — they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate. An emotional adventure in which the girls and the women they eventually become are tough, their friendships are authentic, and their journey through time is epic.”

“Toy Story” 4 co-writer Stephany Folsom is attached to pen the adaptation and is among its exec producers. She will executive produce with Vaughan and Plan B. Folsom wrote the screenplay for “This is Jane,” an upcoming abortion activist drama directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Michelle Williams.
