Meryl Streep is officially the queen of August. Deadline has reported from CinemaCon that her latest film, “Florence Foster Jenkins,” will open on August 12, 2016.
The films tells the true story of a New York City heiress and socialite who longed to be a singer, but whose voice was actually terrible. Hugh Grant plays her manager who hides the truth from her and promotes her career.
Despite normally being considered a “dump month,” August has allowed Streep to flourish. Her previous hits “Julie & Julia,” “Hope Springs,” “Ricki and the Flash” and “The Giver” all opened in August, and 2008’s “Mama Mia” opened late in July allowing it to grow during the hot, summer month.
Thankfully, this release date announcement adds another female-led film to a summer scarce on women. Other female-directed or female-centric films hitting the summer break include Jodie Foster’s “Money Monster” on May 13, “Alice Through the Looking Glass” on May 27, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” on June 17, Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG” on July 1, the all-lady “Ghostbusters” on July 15, Mandie Fletcher’s “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” on July 22 and the Mila Kunis/Kristen Bell comedy “Bad Moms” on July 29.
Streep has never struggled to earn Oscar nominations, and we’re betting that her performance in the biopic catches the Academy’s eyes.
