Yesterday’s Golden Globe nominations left us — and many, many others — disappointed by the lack of recognition for women directors. That same day, Funko, the company behind Funko Pop figurines, announced that it’s releasing a doll inspired by “When They See Us” creator, director, writer, and exec producer Ava DuVernay. The acclaimed Netflix series about the Exonorated Five — formerly known as the Central Park Five — was notably absent from the Globes’ nominations. Funko also recently “shared that ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins will get her own Pop as well,” Entertainment Weekly details. The filmmakers are making history as the first female directors to be turned into Pop dolls.
DuVernay’s Pop is clad in an ARRAY shirt, a nod to the multi-hyphenate’s distribution, arts, and advocacy collective that specializes in film and TV by women and people of color.
“13th,” “Selma,” and “A Wrinkle in Time” are among DuVernay’s feature credits. She became the first woman of color to direct a $100 million-plus live-action film with the latter.
Jenkins is best known for bringing “Wonder Woman” to the big screen. The 2017 Gal Gadot-starrer took in over $821 million worldwide, making it the 82nd highest-grossing film of all time. She reprised her directing duties on “Wonder Woman 1984,” set to bow June 5, and also co-wrote the script. Her other credits include “Monster,” “The Killing,” and “I Am the Night.”
A release date for the Pops hasn’t been announced yet.
