Patty Jenkins will return to direct “Wonder Woman 2.” After more than two months of speculation and rumors, Deadline reports that Jenkins is close to signing on for the sequel in a historic agreement.
No specific numbers have been revealed yet, but the source writes that Jenkins’ “payday and deal [are] in line with any other director who has performed at this level.” This means that Jenkins, who already holds the record for female director with the highest domestic opening, will be the highest-paid female director, period.
In fact, “Wonder Woman 2” will see Jenkins become one of the highest paid directors in Hollywood, regardless of gender. “Wonder Woman” has had a string of financial successes since its June 2 release: a $100.5 million domestic opening, box office longevity, and a global take of nearly $800 million (s0 far). That kind of triumph puts Jenkins on the same level as Zack Snyder when he signed on for “Man of Steel.” Per Deadline, he ended up taking home $10 million for the 2013 Superman flick.
As Forbes points out, Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 2” deal is historic for another reason: this is “the first time in recent history that a female director has helmed both the franchise starter and the sequel.” Male helmers are often at the reins throughout an entire franchise (James Gunn’ “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones”) but female directors are often dropped after directing the first in a franchise. For example, Sam Taylor-Johnson directed 2015 mega-hit “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but was replaced by James Foley for this year’s sequel.
“Wonder Woman” recently crossed the $402 million mark at the domestic box office. In domestic earnings, that makes it the highest-earning film from a female director.
The Cold War-set “Wonder Woman 2” is scheduled to open December 13, 2019.
