News, Women Directors

Patty Jenkins in Talk to Direct Thor 2

Even if this doesn’t come to pass, the fact that a woman, a director like Patty Jenkins who is best known for directing the shit out of Charlize Theron in Monster and for directing the pilot of The Killing is in talks to direct a big budget comic book action hero movie is a giant step forward. I don’t recall a woman’s never ever being mentioned in the press to direct a film with this size budget.

The first Thor which was directed by Kenneth Branagh had a budget of $150 million. It was actually a pretty decent action film that didn’t make me feel like my IQ was seeping out of my ears while sitting in the theatre.

The fact that Marvel Studios, the producers of Thor would think outside the box and hire Kenneth Branagh is a step in the right direction, but the news that a woman like Patty Jenkins is being considered for the sequel is big news. Imagine what it would be like if a movie directed by a woman made upwards of $50 million on its opening weekend. Catherine Hardwicke has the record at $69 million for Twilight. And while that is awesome, this could be bigger because this film is not a film about a girl or a woman — it’s about an action hero.

This gig for Jenkins would be a great door opener for female directors.
