Paula Patton to Topline and Produce “Josephine Baker’s Last Dance” Adaptation

Patton in "About Last Night"

Paula Patton is bringing Josephine Baker’s extraordinary life to the screen. The Hollywood Reporter confirms she has acquired film and television rights to “Josephine Baker’s Last Dance,” a biographical novel by Sherry Jones, with plans to star in and produce an adaptation.

Published last December, “Josephine Baker’s Last Dance” traces the titular Jazz Age icon’s life, from her early years in poverty in St. Louis to her dancing career in Europe to her work in the French resistance during WWII to her participation in the civil rights movement.

“Baker left America for France while in her 20s, finding almost instant success as a chanteuse and dancer who was willing to push many envelopes, gaining the attention of Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, and others,” the source details. “During the war, her celebrity allowed her to move easily through high-class social circles and gather information from Axis officials.” She refused to perform in segregated clubs in the U.S., worked with the NAACP, and “was the only woman to stand alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and speak at the 1963 March on Washington.”

“Josephine Baker had an incredible life and was a remarkable woman,” Patton said. “It’s been a childhood dream of mine to play such an inspirational person and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to tell her story.”

No word on whether Patton’s adaptation will be for television or the big screen. A search for writers to pen the project is currently in progress.

Patton will star in BET+’s first original feature, “Sacrifice,” a legal thriller centered on an entertainment lawyer. Her upcoming projects also include “Four Kids and It,” a fantasy pic that sees a group of children encountering a magical creature while vacationing in Cornwall. “Precious” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” are among her previous credits.
