Paz Vega is headed to “Tacowood.” The Cannes award-winning actress is set to star in and produce the MGM International TV comedy series, Deadline reports. The story focuses on a single mom who moves from Mexico City to Los Angeles in the hopes of making it as an actress.
Based on an original idea from Frank Ariza (“Dreamland”), “Tacowood” “follows Guada (Vega), a 40-year-old single mother who spends her days running her family’s taco truck business in the outskirts of Mexico City as she embarks on the journey of a lifetime with her mother and 10-year-old daughter to pursue her dream of becoming a Hollywood actress.”
MGM International TV will produce and distribute. As one of its top priorities, the company, which launched last year, has decided to develop “culturally rich programming with Latinx talent both in front of and behind the camera for English- and Spanish-speaking audiences around the world.”
“Making a more inclusive cinema, focusing on minorities, and fairly representing the society in which we live is a responsibility of everyone who works in this industry,” Vega said. “That is why I feel extremely excited to join MGM and put my voice at the service of this beautiful initiative that will generate great opportunities for the Latin community.”
Vega won Cannes Film Festival’s Chopard Trophy for her breakthrough performance in “Sex and Lucía.” The film also netted her a Goya Award, the equivalent of an Oscar in her native Spain. “Spanglish,” “The OA,” and “Cuna De Lobos” are among her other credits.
