Penélope Cruz is set to hit the road in Toni Kalem’s “Layover.” The Oscar-winner will play a traveling saleswoman who, according to the release, goes “on the lam from her life.”
Claire Newbold, a so-called “master of reinvention,” is talented and funny, but she’s also a mess. It doesn’t sound like her guilty pleasures are particularly dangerous, though: She loves sneaking into hotel rooms and is especially passionate about swimming in their pools.
Kalem previously wrote and directed 1999’s “A Slipping-Down Life,” starring Lili Taylor (“American Crime,” “Six Feet Under”). The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival. She penned the script for “Layover,” which is an adaptation of best-selling author Lisa Zeidner’s 1999 novel of the same name. Kalem also has decades of acting experience to her name — she is perhaps best known for her role as Angie Bonpensiero in “The Sopranos.” Her other credits include “Picket Fences,” “MacGyver,” and “Trapper John, M.D.”
“Toni Kalem’s beautifully layered adaptation of Lisa Zeidner’s acclaimed book is a provocative blend of humor and heartbreak. With the addition of the incomparable Penelope Cruz to our team, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase such strong female talent both in front of and behind the camera,” said producer Tatiana Kelly. Cruz will also produce the project.
Cruz’s next big screen outing will be the Spanish drama “Ma ma.”
