The late “League of Their Own” director Penny Marshall will be honored by the town of Rockford, Illinois. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the home of the Rockford Peaches — the real-life women’s baseball team at the center of “A League of Their Own’s” story — is hosting a Penny Marshall Celebration from September 13-15. Plans for Rockford’s International Women’s Baseball museum will be revealed at the event.
Marshall’s family, including her daughter Tracy Reiner — who starred in “A League of Their Own” as Betty “Spaghetti” Horn — and her grandchildren, will attend the celebration.
“The Rockford Peaches have had an international reputation, and our community has celebrated the team’s history for many years. We’re excited about next steps in establishing the International Women’s Baseball Center in Rockford,” said Rockford mayor Tom McNamara. “Our administration and City Council recognize the importance of this project not only to the City but also to women’s baseball and to the legacy of our Rockford Peaches.”
A classic, “A League of Their Own” was released in 1992. Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty, and Tom Hanks toplined the pic about two sisters who join Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II.
Marshall’s other directorial credits include “Big,” “Awakenings,” and “The Preacher’s Wife.” “Laverne & Shirley,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “Happy Days” are among her on-screen projects. Marshall died last December at the age of 75.
