PGA Awards 2019: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Being Serena” Win Big

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"

“Mrs. Maisel” is still on a marvelous awards season streak. Amy Sherman-Palladino’s tale of a ’50s housewife forging a career in standup comedy won the The Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy at Saturday’s PGA Awards, according to Deadline. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” received the honor last year as well.

Sherman-Palladino also accepted the Norman Lear Award for Achievement in Television, as previously announced. Jane Fonda took home the Stanley Kramer Award in honor of her commitment to activism and social justice off-screen.

“Being Serena,” the HBO docuseries tracing tennis star Serena Williams’ professional and personal lives, nabbed The Award for Outstanding Sports Program.

Women-produced projects such as Mr. Rogers doc “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and critical darling “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” also nabbed accolades. The former received The Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures, the latter The Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures. The producers of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” include Caryn Capotosto, and Amy Pascal and Christina Steinberg are among “Into the Spider-Verse’s.”

Ahead of this weekend’s PGA Awards, guild presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher unveiled the Independent Production Safety Initiative, per Variety. The anti-sexual harassment initiative will offer free training and guidance to productions with a team of 20 or less, but “no HR or legal department conversant in the issues.” CBS — the company that employed, ousted, and eventually denied severance to alleged sexual predator Les Moonves — is funding the program.

Next, Berman and Fisher will set their sights on making productions more diverse and inclusive. “People tend to hire who they know, and have already worked with, and that doesn’t increase the pool,” Fisher said. “Producers can really affect the outcome of the climate there.”
