“Fleabag” creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has yet another series in the works. Her newest show, BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” just received a second season pickup before a single episode of the spy thriller had aired. Now comes word that HBO has ordered a pilot for “Run,” the rising star’s series about exes who made a fateful pact 15 years ago. Vicky Jones, Waller-Bridge’s frequent collaborator and the current playwright in residence at London’s National Theatre, is set to pen the script.
A co-production with Entertainment One, “Run” follows former lovers who once agreed that “if they ever needed to escape life, they could send each other a simple text message — ‘RUN’ — and impulsively disappear together,” The Hollywood Reporter summarizes. Waller-Bridge will have a recurring role in the comedic thriller.
Jones directed the award-winning stage version of Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag,” which preceded the Amazon series about a self-destructive cafe owner dealing with the aftermath of a tragedy. Jones, who wrote an upcoming episode of “Killing Eve,” has said that she and Waller-Bridge “wanted to create theater in which women could discuss anything without censoring themselves.” Jones’ credits as a playwright include “Touch” and “The One.”
“Killing Eve” premiered to rave reviews on April 8. The cat-and-mouse thriller centers on Eve (Sandra Oh), a security services operative who dreams of leaving her desk job behind to be a spy, and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), the gifted assassin she’s tasked with bringing to justice. Waller-Bridge serves as showrunner on the series. “The fact that the voice of the show is a young woman’s voice, and her tone and style is very fresh, I definitely wanted to be aligned with that,” Oh said of “Killing Eve.”
“Broadchurch” and “Crashing” are among Waller-Bridge’s acting credits, and she created the latter. She has a role in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” set to bow May 25. “Fleabag’s” sophomore season is expected to drop in 2019.
