Phoebe Waller-Bridge Tapped to Do Touch Ups on “Bond 25” Script

Waller-Bridge in "Fleabag"

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is bringing her signature dark sense of humor to the next James Bond film. Variety confirms the “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve” creator has been tasked with polishing the 25th 007 pic’s script. Bond star Daniel Craig reportedly felt the film needed another pass “to add more humor” and specifically requested Waller-Bridge for the job.

Production on the working-titled “Bond 25” is still expected to kick off at the end of the month. The Cary Fukunaga-directed pic is currently scheduled for an April 8, 2020 release.

No word yet on whether Waller-Bridge will get a writing credit for touching up the script. The only woman writer to receive credit in the long-running franchise is Johanna Harwood. She nabbed a writer credit for reworking “Dr. No” and an adaptation credit for “From Russia With Love.” (Update: On April 25, Vulture reported that “producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson … confirmed that the newest Bond script was written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Scott Z. Burns, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge,” suggesting that Waller-Bridge will receive a credit.)

Despite its nearly-60 year history, the Bond film franchise has never had a woman director.

The second season of “Killing Eve,” Waller-Bridge’s series tracing the obsessive relationship between an international assassin and the agent trying to bring her down, airs Sundays on BBC America and AMC. It was renewed for a third season the morning after the Season 2 premiere.

“Fleabag” will return for its second, and final, season May 17 on Amazon Prime. It was broadcast in the UK earlier this year. Based on Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show of the same name, the series follows the adventures of a caustic, self-destructive woman in London. An Off Broadway run of the play “Fleabag” starring Waller-Bridge recently wrapped.
