Pic About Aviation Pioneer Pancho Barnes in the Works

Florence “Pancho” Barnes soared her way into history books, and now the trailblazer will have her story told on the screen. Genius Produced, a developer and producer of online learning media, has acquired the rights to the aviation pioneer’s epic tale in an agreement with Barnes’ family and estate, a press release announced. Genius Produced CEO Kim Rocco Shields (“Love Is All You Need?”) will direct and produce, and Dahlia Heyman (“Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You”) has been tapped to pen the script.

Born in 1901 as Florence Lowe, Barnes first discovered the thrill of flying under the guidance of her grandfather, who established America’s first military air unit during the Civil War. “After a youth spent riding stunt horses in Hollywood and fighting Mexican revolutionaries while disguised as a man, she was dubbed ‘Pancho’ by her compatriots, and the name stuck; her last name was acquired through marriage,” the press release explains. Barnes obtained her pilot’s license in 1928 and became a barnstormer and air racer. She broke Amelia Earhart’s women’s world air speed record at the age of 27. Earhart was portrayed by Hilary Swank in Mira Nair’s 2009 biopic “Amelia.”

“We are tremendously excited to tell the story of Pancho Barnes, a woman who flouted the expectation of what a woman could be,” said Shields. “She was a fearless and charismatic woman who defied the odds at every turn. I can’t wait to tell Pancho’s incredible story and I’m thrilled to work with Dahlia Heyman on this project.”

No word on casting just yet.

A 2009 doc about Barnes, “The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club,” screened at the Athena Film Festival, a celebration of women in leadership roles. Amanda Pope (“The Desert of Forbidden Art”) directed the award-winning project.
