Pilar Palomero’s directorial debut won the night’s biggest honor at Spain’s Goya Awards. “Schoolgirls” was named Best Film at Saturday’s hybrid ceremony, which took place virtually and in-person.
A coming of-age story set in 1992 Spain, “Schoolgirls” follows Cecilia, an 11-year-old girl studying at a nun’s school who is forever changed by the arrival of a new classmate.
Palomero took home honors for Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay. Daniela Cajías won Best Cinematographer for her work on the film, marking the first time a woman has won a Goya in that category.
“Schoolgirls” made its world premiere at last year’s Berlinale.
