‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Tops Weekend Box Office, Grosses $107.5 Million in Three Days

Based on this weekend’s box-office tallies, “Pitch Perfect 3.” is definitely happening now.

Disproving all the idiots out there who say that audiences won’t watch movies about women and that female filmmakers can’t helm hits, “Pitch Perfect 2” made $69.32million domestically over the weekend, minting Elizabeth Banks as the first-time director with the highest opening weekend ever. The singing sequel made more in its first three days than the original film made during its entire domestic theatrical run ($65 million), racking up an impressive-by-any-standard $107.5 million international gross in its opening weekend.

Female audiences made “Pitch Perfect 2” the #1 movie at the box office (with 62% under the age of 25), surpassing the (equally feminist) “Mad Max: Fury Road” domestically. More than three-quarters of ticket-buyers were female.

Written by Kay Cannon and starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and newcomer-to-the-franchise Hailee Steinfeld, “Pitch Perfect” had a production budget of $29 million and received a CinemaScore of A-, suggesting that positive word-of-mouth will have audiences returning next weekend.
