The Barden Bellas have secured a captain to steer them towards box-office glory. A new director for “Pitch Perfect 3” has been named after its original helmer, Elizabeth Banks, pulled out due to conflicts with scheduling and “parental responsibilities.” The third installment of the aca-franchise will be directed by Trish Sie, who made her feature debut with 2014’s “Step Up All In.” The dance-centric movie took in over $86 million on an estimated budget of $45 million.
Sie seems like a great fit for the project. She’s a choreographer who has directed music videos, including OK Go’s viral sensations “Here It Goes Again” and “Upside Down & Inside Out.” Song and dance numbers are, of course, a huge part of what audiences have come to love about the “Pitch Perfect” franchise.
The film will see the return of cast members Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, and Banks, the latter of whom will serve as a producer. The script was penned by Kay Cannon (“New Girl”), who wrote the first two films.
“Pitch Perfect,” directed by Jason Moore, took home a whopping $115 million and was made for only $17 million. “Pitch Perfect 2,” Bank’s feature directorial debut, did even better at the box-office: the comedy grossed over $287 million on a budget of $29 million.
You can expect “Pitch Perfect 3” in theaters December 22, 2017.
