Consummate sidekick Rebel Wilson is finally set to top-line a high-profile film. Variety is reporting that the “Pitch Perfect” franchise breakout will star in an as-yet untitled romantic comedy from New Line.
A director hasn’t been chosen for the project yet. Actress Erin Cardillo (“The Suite Life on Deck,” “Passions”) wrote the script, which is being rewritten by Dana Fox (“Couples Retreat”) and Katie Silberman (“The Set Up”).
Wilson will play a disillusioned young woman skeptical about romance and love. Most unexpectedly, she “wakes up one day to discover that her life has become a romantic comedy.”
The Australian actress has previously commented on the fact that there are now “more female-written, female driven scripts” that allow women “to be funny, have their own power.” She said, “It’s been a boys’ club in comedy up until now.”
Wilson’s credits include “How to Be Single,” “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” “Bridesmaids,” and ABC’s “Super Fun Night.” Her body is unconventional by Hollywood standards — and especially leading lady standards — a fact that Wilson celebrates. She has shared, “When I walked into my agent’s office for the first time [in 2009], they looked at me and said, ‘Wow, we have nobody on our books like you.’ And they signed me on my second day here.” Wilson explained, “I wouldn’t ever want to compete with what I call ‘the glamours’ — the really gorgeous people. I’m about the brain, the heart, and what’s on the inside. I feel really lucky to be the body type I am.”
