Political Women on the Small Screen: Barbara Hall’s Secretary of State TV Show and Hillary Clinton Miniseries Update

null

CBS is working with Barbara Hall, co-executive producer of Homeland, on a series about a female secretary of state. Entitled Madame Secretary, the series will follow a female secretary of state as she balances the demands of her high profile job–working on international relations, inner-office politics and dynamics of her own family and personal life.

Hall will write the project which she will also executive produce alongside Morgan Freeman under his Revelations Entertainment. Lori McCreary and Tracy Mercer will also co-executive produce.

Hall’s first season as executive producing Homeland begins on September 29th.

On another front, we’ve reported quite a bit about the multiple Hillary Clinton television projects for CNN and NBC that are currently in development. Both projects have been controversial amongst critics and politicos alike. The Republican National Committee has voted to pull primary debates from both NBC and CNN. The NBC project to be written by Courtney Hunt and starring Diane Lane, is currently shopping around for studios to work on the project.

NBC had been early talks with Fox TV Studios to produce the miniseries which fell apart over the weekend. Now that Fox won’t produce the project, which will look at Clinton’s life both professionally and personally from 1998 to present day, they are continuing the search for a studio to work with but things are not looking good. NBC Studio head Bob Greenblatt recently walked very far back on the miniseries even after announcing it to great hoopla just weeks before.

Here’s his latest comment:

The Hillary Clinton movie has not been ordered to production, only a script is being written at this time.  It is ‘in development’, the first stage of any television series or movie, many of which never go to production. Speculation, demands, and declarations pertaining to something that isn’t created or produced yet seem premature.

This does not sound very positive.  For all we know they are not even looking for another studio to produce the miniseries and will announce its cancellation when the time is right.
