“The Night Of’s” Poorna Jagannathan and “The Bold Type’s” Nikohl Boosheri will topline “Alia’s Birth,” The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
Slated to begin shooting this summer in New York, the LGBTQ indie drama sees the pair playing a couple in a rocky relationship forced to spend the night apart. Newcomer Catharine Daddario also appears in the pic.
Sam Abbas (“The Wedding”) penned the script and will direct as well as produce via his LGBTQ-focused banner ArabQ Films. Tatiana Bears and Nicole Townsend are also among “Alia’s Birth’s” producers.
“Acting is a game of snakes and ladders and if you’re a woman of color, let’s just say there are a whole lot more snakes in the game,” Jagannathan has said. “There’s a lot of stereotyping, there’s such a limited number of roles available to ethnic actors,” she explained.
Set to appear in Season 2 of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” Jagannathan’s recent credits include “The Act,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Gypsy.” “Altered Carbon,” “Rogue,” and “Farrah Goes Bang” are among Boosheri’s previous credits.
