Kalyanee Mam’s A River Changes Course is a documentary that chronicles the lives of three Cambodian families who are dealing with the struggle to maintain their traditional ways of life while the rapid development of a modern Cambodia happens around them.
Mam’s documentary won the World Documentary Grand Jury prize at Sundance this year, and just this week picked up the Center for Documentary Studies Filmmaker Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. This award honors works that can be potential catalysts for education and change.
Since winning at Sundance, both the documentary and the buzz surrounding Mam have increased. It’s a personal project for Mam, who escaped Cambodia in 1979 when she was 4. As an adult she has been committed to social justice–in her work as a filmmaker and before that while working as a legal consultant.
