Projects About Trailblazing Women, Essential Workers in NYC in Dev at Emergence Films

Sienna Beckman, Emergence Films co-founder

Emergence Films, a production company dedicated to supporting women and underrepresented filmmakers, has two new projects in development. A press release has announced that “Fearless & Fierce,” a short-form series profiling women trailblazers, and “When the Shifts Change,” a non-fiction series spotlighting essential workers in New York, are in the works.

“Now more than ever do we need to hear from diverse and underrepresented voices and actively challenge and dismantle the system that was built to silence them,” said Sienna Beckman, Emergence Films co-founder. “Our aim is to highlight and amplify as many of these as possible.”

“Fearless & Fierce” follows the Geena Davis Institute’s motto, “If She Can See It, She Can Be It,” aiming to “showcase
and celebrate more diverse female role models around the world.” Each episode will feature a woman or non-binary guest from a different field — such as media/arts, STEM, business, sports, activism, and politics — who will discuss another pioneering woman.

“When the Shifts Change” is now in the last stages of post-production. From filmmaker Lauren Anders-Brown (“(Power of Play”), the series is comprised of “self-recorded confessionals by New Yorkers during the COVID-19 lockdown as they explore the highs and lows of being essential workers.” The project will catch up with eight workers, including a maternity nurse, a courier, and a subway conductor, before and after work.

Emergence Films’ mission is to bring more portrayals of “strong, complex, and multidimensional women” to the screen. The company is based in Los Angeles, London, and Seattle.
