“Broad City” might be ending — no, kween! — but luckily, a couple of its alumnae are already working on new projects for Comedy Central. According to Deadline, the network is developing shows from “Broad City” star/co-creator/scribe/director Abbi Jacobson as well as former writer Naomi Ekperigin.
Jacobson is teaming up with blogger/author Samantha Irby and “Inside Amy Schumer” head writer Jessi Klein for a comedy based on Irby’s 2013 essay collection, “Meaty.” The untitled project will center on “20-something Sam (Irby) as she tries to laugh her way through failed relationships, identity crises, her sexuality, and a recent Crohn’s disease diagnosis, among other challenges.”
Irby created and wrote the show, and will executive produce with Jacobson and Klein. The trio previously sold the project, then called “Meaty,” to FX in 2016.
Jacobson voices Bean on “Disenchantment” and Emily on “BoJack Horseman.” Previously, she developed a “League of Their Own”-inspired series for Amazon. No word on whether that project is still in the works.
Irby’s second book of essays, “We Are Never Meeting in Real Life,” hit shelves in 2017. She runs the blog “bitches gotta eat.” Klein voices Jessi on “Big Mouth.” “Black Monday,” “Transparent,” and “Kroll Show” are among her writing credits. She published an essay collection, “You’ll Grow Out of It,” in 2016.
Ekperigin created “How to be a Couple” with her real-life partner, Andy Beckerman. The project is about an interracial couple “in a wild polyamorous affair with their careers.”
Ekperigin is set to star. She and Beckerman wrote the pilot and serve as EPs. Annie Mebane (“The Goldbergs”) is showrunning and exec producing.
Also an actress, Ekperigin’s screen credits include “Single Parents” and “Alone Together.” She wrote for and served as story editor on NBC newsroom comedy “Great News.” She and Beckerman host podcast and live comedy show “Couples Therapy.”
“Broad City’s” fifth and final season is currently airing Thursdays on Comedy Central.
