Netflix has acquired exclusive worldwide streaming rights to crime drama “Marcella,” starring “Pushing Daisies” alum Anna Friel. The series premiered on ITV in the U.K. last night.
Friel plays the titular character, a detective and mother of two. She sacrifices her job to take care of her family, but a decade later finds herself back at work when her husband walks out on her. Marcella is assigned an especially stressful case — investigating a serial killer — and has difficulty coping with her own psychological problems.
Laura Carmichael (“Downton Abbey”) and Sinead Cusack (“Jekyll & Hyde”) co-star.
“It’s a close-up of a woman almost having a nervous breakdown,” Friel hinted in an interview. She elaborated, “Marcella has two sides to herself. One is her home life when she’s on her own and what happens when you close that door at the end of the day; and the other is mascara and you go to work and be a very good detective.”
Friel’s credits include “Limitless,” “The Saboteurs” and “American Odyssey.” The British actress is perhaps best known to American audiences for her role in ABC’s short-lived cult TV series “Pushing Daisies,” for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. The comedy aired from 2007 to 2009.
